Currently, there is a lot of talk about the necessity for white America’s atonement for the past sins of racism and the “burden of white guilt.” It’s important to be clear eyed about the genesis of, the actual participants in and the antecedents to the current conflict. Underlying liberal finger pointing is an ahistoric exercise in amnesia concerning where the responsibility for slavery and the Jim Crow laws, era, and its legislative progeny. Let’s be clear. It was the Democrat party that was most responsible for the institution of slavery, the resulting Post-Civil War Jim Crow practices, and those attitudes and laws that continue to largely infect contemporary America.
At the time of the Civil War, ALL SLAVEHOLDERS WERE DEMOCRATS. There is absolutely no historical documentation or proof the a Republican … any Republican … owned a slave. The Democrat Party was the party of Jim Crow and the KKK. The KKK was present in nearly every southern state by 1870 and was the organized DEMOCRAT RESISTANCE of white southern DEMOCRATS opposed to the REPUBLICAN Party’s Reconstruction-era policies aimed at establishing political and economic equality for Black Americans.
